'A Dream Fulfilled' was commissioned by Opuha Water Ltd to record for posterity the vision, tenacity and hard work of those individuals who had the foresight to anticipate the wide-ranging benefits to South Canterbury of the Opuha Dam. The book recounts the story of bringing reliable irrigation and river flows to South Canterbury a story that begins in the 1980s when the region suffered three serious droughts that saw the rivers run dry and farmers nearing financial ruin. The sometimes tumultuous journey began initially with the quest to bring water from Lake Tekapo and concludes with the successful commissioning of the Opuha Dam in November 1998 an outcome that was far from certain the year before when the partially built dam was severely damaged by a major flood event.
