Iwi, through the Treaty of Waitangi and individual treaty claim settlements, have a growing statutory role in NZ's freshwater management. INZ has introduced two training courses to help irrigators and irrigation schemes increase their understanding of tangata whenua. A 2-hour introductory workshop provides a taster of the importance of freshwater to Maori and the role they play in its management, and a 1-day Marae course, which includes an overnight stay covers the 'Foundations for Working with Tangata Whenua' including:
•Maori and freshwater
•The Treaty of Waitangi
•Claims and settlements
•Maori spirituality
•Introduction to marae protocols
