Sue grew up in a rural environment, mostly in Southland.

This helped to shape her future career choice of civil engineer with an emphasis on water resource management.  Sue’s first involvement with the irrigation industry started with the Ministry of Works and Development in the 1980’s.  In her roles at the Ministry Sue was involved in policy development and in the administration and construction of government-funded irrigation schemes throughout New Zealand.  Following the disestablishment of the Ministry Sue had 10 years of regulatory experience with the Wellington and latterly the Otago Regional Councils.

Sue now works for Opus International Consultants Ltd in Alexandra, as a specialist RMA advisor and Project Manager.  Being in the heart of Central Otago, many of Sue’s clients are from the irrigation sector.  With the extensive knowledge of irrigation gained from her time with the Ministry and with ORC, Sue has amassed a wealth of knowledge of the irrigation industry and its advances locally and nationally.

Anyone who has an interest in water management and use can’t help but be aware of the changes that have been occurring in recent years in relation to water management.  The involvement that INZ has had in the evolution of these policies has been invaluable to securing a balance to the policies that are emerging.  There are issues around the future of irrigation in Central that are unique to the area and I’m excited to be given the opportunity to continue to represent irrigators on the INZ Board.

Sue lives in Alexandra, but retains a rural interest on development of a small lifestyle block on the outskirts of Alexandra.  Sue was a Board member of the Earnscleugh Irrigation Company for 6 years during the 2000’s.
